European view on Abkhazia, part V. The Republic of Abkhazia: Paradise in limbo. Film Box2 TV.
Said Lord Nicholas Rea (Lord Nicholas Rea):
- This question, which is, I think, would like to ask a lot of people. How are you going to maintain your independence? While the big neighbor (meaning Russia), located just across the border, and the country so much depends on Russia?
Meets Sergei Bagapsh, President of Abkhazia:
- Many people would like in Russia and in the West, that we were a part of Georgia, as used to be. But before to Georgia we drove Stalin and Beria! You can not allow any conflict and difficult situation, the post-war, if you listen to only one side. Both the EU and the European Parliament, and other international institutions to listen only to Georgia. After the decision of the United Nations have identified two sides of the conflict - Georgia and Abkhazia.
Said Lord Nicholas Rea (Lord Nicholas Rea):
- This is a very well-reasoned statement, and I think it reflects well the position of Abkhazia. I wish that you were made to the UN to these statements, because it is something that deserves to be heard at the UN.
Remembering Stalin's rule and the fact that, by 1989, in Abkhazia has just over 90,000 Abkhazians, who accounted for only 17.8% of the population of the Abkhaz Gorbachev responded to the call to a policy of openness and expressed their concerns to life in Georgia.
It was mostly a reaction to the ugly and rampant chauvinism, which reigned in Georgia in the late eighties, and who threatened various minorities living in the then Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic.
But the determination of Abkhazia again to take their destiny into their own hands by peaceful means, headed by Eduard Shevardnadze, Georgia responded August 14, 1992 a military attack. Now it just mark the fifteenth anniversary of the start of the war.
Said Vladislav Ardzinba, the first President of the Republic of Abkhazia:
- At this difficult time for our country, I appeal to all of its citizens, no matter what nationality he was. Stand up to defend Abkhazia! In this unity - we are invincible.
And now let's hear the voices of those who fought in that war.
Said Alkhas Tkhagushev:
- At the time that I have found, that the collapse of the Soviet Union, all these constant meetings, and this time Gamsakhurdia (the first President of Georgia). Of course, at some point, I'm a young guy suddenly started to think, why should anyone, so I was humiliated, and someone has to call into question the fact that I live in the land of their ancestors, and I, for example, just remember that it was a feeling that's a premonition of war.
In any case, it was the events of the eighty-ninth year, when there is bloodshed. In the history of the Georgians and Abkhazians were different times, in principle, we do not live neighbors for centuries, so well all evolved in different ways. I hope that here this dark part of our history it ever will, and yet as though it may sound trite, but it is still a war come to an end and the world begins.
Said Givi Smyr:
- First, the huge loss of our loved ones, and it is incurable wounds, incurable. That's the only thing that can heal this creation, but there are wounds that bleed to the end of life - in my unit had a lot of explosions. Here I go out on the lawn, and again, and forget, and I think that mine. What is it? Even now, that's how many years! Fifteen years, yes, passed ...
Many places have been destroyed during the war between Georgia and Abkhazia in 1992 - 1993 years, but the village has always been Escher main purpose. One reason was that it stood almost on the front line north of Sukhum, separating Georgian and Abkhazian forces. The second reason was that it is the native village of the then leader of the Abkhazian President Vladislav Ardzinba. Right behind me is the fact that when it was a rural school ...
Of course, the major tragedy of the war attached to the killing and maiming people. We should not forget that during the war with Georgia, the Abkhaz lost killed at least 4% of its population. November 22, 1992 was made especially malicious and completely conscious act of cultural vandalism that occurred in the area behind me.
At the time, this place was the Abkhazian Research Institute of History, Literature and Language. The Institute has a very valuable archive. That night the Georgian invaders set fire to the building. The aim was to destroy the arson evidence supporting the presence of the Abkhazians in Abkhazia ground, thus contribute to Georgia's claims to the territory of Abkhazia. When firefighters arrived to them, at gunpoint, it was forbidden to put out the flames.
This footage chronicles the frontline taken during the liberation of Abkhazia - Sukhum - the Georgian invaders. With the return of 27 September 1993 the Abkhaz control of their capital, Sukhumi, the war actually ended. Lenin had already been removed from his pedestal in front of the former administrative center of Abkhazia. During the capture of the building Abkhazians had to destroy it, and in this state it has been preserved to this day.
Lord Nicholas Rea says:
- One of the saddest moments was visiting Tkuarchal, where a number of small businesses, and even more big factories in the coal-bearing plants completely inactive. I think the other fairly large plants is simply not working. Is there a chance that they will recover?
Meets Sergei Shamba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia:
- In Soviet times, Abkhazia built unnecessarily large objects. This was done in order to bring in labor from Georgia to these enterprises, ie was such a pump for pumping the population. Immediately after the war was not optimistic about the revival of the resort business, but, nevertheless, it happened, that is, every year significantly increased influx of tourists. Now, in connection with the construction of the Olympic venues had a large interest and there are already a lot of different proposals for the restoration of this brick and cement. All this in a large number will be required for construction, and there is no doubt that Abkhazia will still contribute to these projects.
