Abkhazia Part 11 - The European view about Abkhazia Part III

European view about Abkhazia, part III. The Republic of Abkhazia: Paradise in limbo. Film Box2 TV.
Holy Apostles Andrew and Simon the Zealot profit once in Abkhazia in order to preach the Word of God. How to find St. Simon was beheaded and buried here - in New Athos, formerly known Psyrtsha. Right here is a church built in the IX - X centuries and dedicated to this saint.
But still, most of today's pilgrims come to New Athos, worshiping Tourism, and not God. Over the New Athos rises Anakopiya - the ancient capital of Abkhazia. Its surrounding wall dates from the IV - V centuries, while it is inside the church was built in the VII - VIII centuries.
By decree of the Emperor Justinian in Abkhazia were created two dioceses. First, as we have seen, was in Pitsunda and a second here - Anakopia. It is logical that continuing our review of Abkhazian history, we are here - to Anakopii - in the ancient center of power. Because it was under these walls in 737, the Arab army under the command of Murvana ibn Muhammad, known Murvanom Deaf defeated.
This defeat was the rise of Leon I - ruler of Abkhazia - which has managed to significantly strengthen its position in the Western Caucasus. After this, using the weakening of the Byzantine power in the end of the VIII century, his successor - Leon II - was able to expand their holdings by capturing a significant part of the next - West - Georgia. He captured the land up to the Liv Mountains, which has long served as a dividing line between the western provinces of Georgia on the one hand and the central-eastern provinces on the other.
Leon assumed the title of King of Abkhazia, Abkhaz and this kingdom, which continue to include in its territory that is now western Georgia, there were about two centuries - between about 770 and 978 years. During this period, the term of Abkhazia, in whatever language or that historic document was not written, applies to the whole territory under the authority of the king of Abkhazia.
The capital of the kingdom was moved to the end of the VIII century hence - of Anakopii - in Kutaisi, which is now the second largest city in Georgia, lying in the western province of Imereti. In 1008 Bagrat - known as Bagrat II in accordance with the tradition of the Abkhaz, but Bagrat III in accordance with the Georgian tradition - was the first king of the united kingdom of the Abkhaz and Georgians.
Bagrat built this majestic church located in the XI century. Church rises above the village of Bedia in Tkuarchalskom region of Abkhazia. Inside the cathedral there is a fresco, willful damage, which depicts Bagrat, as the founder of the Church.
In XIII-XIV century Genoese established their trading posts along the coast of the Black Sea, including Abkhazia. It is interesting to note that, before the Mongols in the middle of XIII century, the term of Abkhazia in various written sources become even more wide territorial sense. During the joint kingdom of Abkhazians and Georgians, he was often used as a synonym for the name of Georgia, and the explanation for this, of course, is that very fundamental role played by the Abkhazians in the creation of the joint kingdom.
At the beginning of XVI century, the Ottoman Empire, due to its dominant position in the Black Sea began to exert influence on the processes in this part of the Caucasus, and from that time appeared among Abkhazians followers of Islam.
Since the end of XVIII century, interest in the Caucasus began to show Russia, but on the way to strengthen its position in the North Caucasus region were freedom-tribes. In 1810, Abkhazia was under Russian protectorate, and after 52 years, Russia has taken it under its ultimate control. This happened immediately after the defeat of the coalition of North Caucasian tribes during the last battle of May 21, 1864 in Krasnaya Polyana, located north of the current resort of Sochi, which will be the venue for the Winter Olympics in 2014. A large number of Abkhazians were forced to immigrate to start a new life in a foreign land.
Said Lord Nicholas Rea (Lord Nicholas Rea):
- You build your company, but to a large extent, under the protection of Russian peacekeepers, and having a big neighbor on the other side of the border. How does this affect the development of your free and democratic society?
Responsible Liana Kvarchelia:
- For us today, the presence of Russian peacekeepers is a factor of stability, on the other hand, you may have heard that during the presidential election was a lot of pressure on the Abkhaz side of the part of Russia to the other candidate was elected.
- No President Bagapsh and the other?
- No, not President Bagapsh and his opponent, and although they were risking their relationship with her, so far the only ally, yet people still insist on the fact that we want to manage themselves, we want to make their own decisions regarding our internal Affairs.
Says Arda Inal-Ipa:
- I think you're right, it is very difficult to build a democracy because there are so many threats around us. It is the enemy who kept repeating the military threats (meaning Georgia), and this is a big neighbor Russia, with his own vision of the solutions of internal processes. And we do not always like it when it happens.
Said Liana Kvarchelia:
- But I think that Russia is trying to maintain the status quo at the moment, as in Kosovo and Abkhazia and the rest of the world is trying to impose on us its decision, that seems unfair.

About Abkhazia today it is a lot of and hotly speak. The small country has stood at first in war, then in economic blockade. It has proclaimed the independence and achieves the international recognition. The background of it de facto the sovereign state is known very much by the few...
