Palace Resorts is preparing to open its first all-inclusive entertainment and luxury resort in Jamaica in March.
The Moon Palace Jamaica Grande, located in the northern town of Ocho Rios, will begin operations March 1, but the inaugural celebration, featuring a concert by Grammy-winner Shaggy, is set for May 7, Palace Resorts' vice president of Sales and Marketing, Kathy Halpern, told Efe Wednesday.
In July 2014, Palace Resorts began negotiations to purchase the old hotel Sunset Jamaica Grande, which was later renovated to bring it up to the company's standards.
Halpern said nearly 1,000 former Sunset Jamaica Grande employees will be part of the staff at the new resort.
"We went in as Palace not to make this resort 'Palace comes to Jamaica.' Instead we are coming to Jamaica, but we are embracing the Jamaican culture," Halpern said, adding that the design and decor drew inspiration from the culture of the island.
Halpern is currently in San Juan to promote the Palace Resorts properties at the Jan. 28-30 Caribbean Travel Marketplace.
Moon Palace Jamaica Grande features over 700 rooms, four pools, a flow-rider attraction, spa, fitness center and other amenities.
She said the company's main markets are the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, though she predicted that the opening of the first Palace Resorts property in Jamaica will attract more Caribbean tourists.
The company operates seven Palace Resorts properties in Mexico. EFE
